Once again, Georgia students are headed back to school facing a sharp peak in COVID-19 cases. The new year started with a spike in reports concentrated mostly in the metro Atlanta region — nearly 19,000 cases were reported statewide on New Year’s Day, smashing Georgia’s previous record of just over 10,000 cases on Jan. 8, 2021.
