Effingham hospital to pay $4 million over diversion of opioids

Effingham Health System will pay a $4.1 million civil penalty settlement to the United States for poor handling of drugs that led to a “significant diversion of opioids.” It was the largest settlement of its kind involving allegations of drug diversion at a hospital, according to a news release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
