Commentary: Guns in homes can endanger children

With the mass shooting at a school in Parkland, Fla., earlier this year, gun violence has again become a subject of debate in the public health arena.

Pediatricians have taken a strong interest in trying to lower the risk of gun injury and death for children.

Dr. Bob Wiskind, an Atlanta pediatrician, focuses on guns in the home posing a threat to kids, in a new GHN Commentary.

“An appeals court ruling in 2017 solidified [pediatricians’] right to ask patients if there are guns in the home and encourage parents to remove guns from the home or at least store firearms safely by locking them in a safe with the ammunition locked separately,’’ Wiskind writes.
